Learn terminology relevant to you.
Please learn your terminology folks. It’s starting to get a little weird when talking to people about their education or career of choice to which for some unknown reason they have not learned their relevant terminology. How are we supposed to communicate our choices to those folks without them having learned the common terms.
Some Background – Jargon is specific to a industry vs terminology being a more widely accepted description of an action, result or process. Slang would be loosely based on the jargon used within an industry. We all have used slang in High School to describe out daily actions. Your exposure to jargon usually comes with our first job. That’s when one of the seasoned employees asks a rookie something in jargon … the learning curve begins.
My first jargon experience came while working at local grocery store. The fellow in charge of the grocery handlers asked me to go to the gas station and ask for a sky-hook. I would assume you can figure where that story is going. So, I race across the parking lot to the gas station. Excuse me, do you have a sky-hook. The gas station attendant looked at me like I was from outer space. Of course it didn’t help that the gas attendant was just starting on the job as well. So the gas guy went looking for the senior gas guy to ask about a sky-hook. Time went by longer than normal and the head of grocery handlers had to walk across the parking lot to see what the hold-up was. Having used this practical joke many times before without any timely delays just didn’t seem right. So the head grocery dude asks me what the delay was, and I said that they are going to get me a sky-hook and will be right back. Well the look on the face of the grocery dude was that of horror. The sky-hook does not exist so how could it be possible that this new grocery handler has found one.
A few minutes of staring at the clock on the wall goes by when the senior gas guy and junior walk up to the counter smiling. At that point two rookies got taught a little jargon.
