Globe Theatre

Travel the World Theatre with a Globe.

So, I grabbed the globe sitting on the desk in the corner of the room and spun it.  I asked one of the kids to put their finger on the globe and stop it. Where it stops nobody knows, but that is where you’ll go.

We have all tried this trick – I hope.  I received my first globe from a sister about twenty years ago – I think – maybe more.  Wow, my sister is older than I thought.  Anyhow, I remember the day and the wrapping paper – small globes.  The globe came in a box with a cut out opening so you could take it for a spin before buying.  Once wrapped the opening was like feeling a baby’s head – the soft spot was the give-away.  It didn’t make a difference because the globe became that gift you would always pull out when ever there was a event somewhere around the world or when planning your vacation overseas.

Today’s internet doesn’t quite have the same romance as a globe.  Despite the convenience of the internet It stills surprises me when someone doesn’t know where France or England are located.  Shakespeare had the Globe Theatre named for it’s spherical shape. Columbus wanted to cross the Atlantic to prove the world was round.  Galileo configured the circumference of the Earth. Who invented the wheel ?  Has anyone figured that out yet.  As artists we must draw circles.  Some people talk in circles.  In nature there are no straight lines only straight segments.  The human form is a series of complex curves.  The Earth is only circular in shape from space. Without water the Earth would look like any old rock in you garden.

All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
Jaques – As you like it, Act 2, Scene 7, 139-143
